Vik Muniz, is a Brazilian artist that moved to North America in the 80s, and was able to live out his dream and become a great photographer. After his success he realized that there wasn't much left in life that he wanted so he decided to give back.
Muniz went returned to Brazil to visit their largest landfill, there he helped the recyclers as part of his charity work. He began by taking pictures of them & then blowing the pictures up & having them place recycled material on it and photograph it. Muniz sold the work when he was done at an auction and the proceeds went back to the workers. During the process the recyclers began to realize that they could do more for their lives, they were able to see past the landfill and had new found dreams for themselves. They were able to see the world in a different light; leave the landfill, some got married, some got divorced, become a secretary, etc.

Extra Points!
"This has got to be made and I am going to make it." - Carrie Mae Weems
Those are the words that stood out to me the most, being creative, having an idea and going for it knowing that you are the only one that is capable of making something as great as what it is that you have imagined in your head. Carrie Mae Weems lectured about her work and the things that made her who she is today, she also spoke about Stop the Violence (StV). StV is something that she created in her hometown, she began by posting signs and worked her way up to billboards and ads. At the end of her lecture she showed a video, if I had to decipher the message, it would be something like... It had to do with a young person writing at a desk and the creative process flowing through their mind is what the scenes were in the video.

Writing Assignment #1
There’s just something about this photo, it just appears to be so inspiring and hopeful, that I believe it makes it hard for anyone not to appreciate it. I found this photo by chance about a year ago or so, since then it has remained as my desktop background. Considering that and the fact that I have yet to grow tired of it, I couldn’t think of a better photo off the top of my head for this assignment to be about. The photo is so artistic and creative that it brings so many things to mind. When first looking at the image it brings thoughts of if the sun were a person this is what she would look like or some type of mythological sun goddess and high fashion. What I really love about the photo is how beautiful and different it is. The subject’s make-up is amazing and the intricate detail in her hair is breathtaking I just find the image to be completely awe inspiring.

Critiquing Amanda
Photo #1:
The composition looks great, I like how the plant slowly rises from level to level. The color really stands out and the contrast between life and death, between the grass and flowers, gives a little more meaning to the photo.
Photo #2:
It's a very nice perspective, the focus is really good too, although I would have like have seen a little more of the trash can just to make it clearer what it was (such as a little of the right side) that bit left me wanting to know a little more.
Photo #3:
I think that this one is actually my favorite, or at least second to #8. I enjoyed how the photo looked a bit battered/broken, it gave the photo a sense of everything belonged together in that area. The red really pops despite the fact that it was dirty, and it has a great hue to it. It leaves you thinking that there was construction taking place or that something had happened there, because it looks as if the ground had been impacted and it leaves me with a feeling of wanting to know if there was an accident or are people just trying to fix a pothole, just random scenarios such as those.
Photo #4:
The tiny splash of pink was really nice to look at, it gave the photo an uplifting sense as though despite all of the other flowers were gone, that one stood strong. I think it would have been a perfect photo if the telephone pole was skewed a bit to the left to give it a little more balance. I feel that with it being centered the right side of the photo became a little heavy.

I liked how all of the trees seemed to meet at one point (converging lines) and the pink flower that looked a bit flamboyant and wild, because everything else was just so plain and almost barren looking.
Photo #6:
The focus is really good, it did not leave me wanting to make a distinct between what all was happening in the picture (in the background, etc.). I liked how the plant didn't seem like it was coming from anywhere, it seemed as if it could have sprouted from the telephone pole.
Photo #7:
I loved how the hydrant looked buried, and the colors of it/throughout, made the photo seem a bit whimsical because the colors are so out of the ordinary it reminds me a bit of a children's story.
Photo #8:
This photo looks amazing! I love all of the motion going on and the background and how it is contrasted by the foreground which just looks completely relaxed, with the coffee cup and the jacket that was placed nonchalantly. It makes me think that whoever those items belonged to that their day was finally winding down, and that they didn't have to be as busy as everyone else in the picture.

I like how the photo feels a bit old timey, the positioning of the hose brings a sense of balance to the photo due to the fact that it is placed vertically throughout the picture. If it was just a neat circle I feel that it would have been unbalanced due to the "empty" space on the left side of the photo.

The purple is such a nice color which really stands out, the shadow on the right side created a rule of thirds and I feel that it also added an all around balance to the photo, because the right side of the photo would have left a bit of an empty feeling without it being there.
